How to build a No Man's Sky starship for combat and long-range travel: hull picks, engine and weapon upgrades, shields, and hyperdrive range.
Your ship in No Man's Sky does just about everything, so what you fly and what you bolt onto it matters more than almost any other gear choice in the game. A hull with the right baked-in bonuses will outperform a fancier ship stuffed with random tech. The three big questions are pretty simple: which hull type, which modules in the tech inventory, and where exactly you place them. Get those right and one ship can handle pirate ambushes and a 2,000 light-year trek to the galactic core without swapping anything.
Comparing Fighter, Explorer, And Hauler Hulls
Every system in the game spawns shuttles plus three specialist types: Fighters, Haulers, and Explorers. Shuttles are the cheap starter option with balanced stats and a low 16.7% base launch cost, but their bonuses top out low and there's no reason to build around one long-term. The three specialists each get a big bonus in one stat, and that bonus is the whole reason to pick them.

Fighters
Fighters get a damage bonus on their class roll, and they turn on a dime. The wiki lists their maneuverability as Very High, in the 387.5 to 445.0 band, which is the difference between staying behind a pirate and eating its whole volley. An S-class Fighter rolls a damage bonus somewhere in the 35 to 45 percent range, and that applies on top of your weapon modules, not instead of them.
The catch is capacity. Fighters cap out at 100 cargo slots, the lowest of the three, and their large-inventory hulls (30 to 38 cargo slots) are the ones you want. If you're building a dedicated combat ship, that trade is fine. You don't need 100 slots of cargo to blow up pirates.
Explorers
Explorers get the hyperdrive bonus, and their class rolls push warp range higher than any other normal hull. An S-class Explorer can roll a hyperdrive bonus well past what a Fighter or Hauler will ever see, which stacks with your hyperdrive modules for serious long-hop range. They also take off for 12.5% launch fuel, half of what a Fighter or Hauler burns, so hopping between planets in a busy system costs you a lot less uranium over a long session.
Their handling sits in the High band, so they're no slouch in a dogfight either. For a pure exploration build, this is the hull. Nine times out of ten it beats everything else for getting across the galaxy.
Haulers
Haulers are the shield archetype, with the biggest deflector bonus of any type, plus huge starting inventories. A large Hauler starts with 40 to 48 cargo slots and upgrades to 120 max, more than anyone else gets. The downside is handling: their maneuverability sits in the Low band, roughly 192.5 to 250.0, so they turn like a bus. Fighting in one takes patience.
So who actually wants a Hauler? Mostly traders and miners hauling stacks of activ indium or gold. As a combat platform it's playable, since the shield bonus buys you a lot of mistakes, but the clumsy turning usually costs you more damage output than the shield saves.
Class matters as much as type
Each ship rolls a class from C to S, and class decides how big those bonuses get. S-class ships need at least a 50% class bonus, and they're rare. Spawn odds shift with the system's economy:

Two things jump out of that table. Wealthy economies (buy a Economy Scanner to find them) spawn A and S-class ships at a much better rate, so park at a rich system's space station and wait for ships to land. Outlaw systems are weirdly decent for S-class hunting at 5%, which beats a wealthy system's 2%, if you can stomach the pirates. Also note that a ship's stats are re-rolled every time it lands, so if a design you love shows up with a bad roll, the same ship can come back later with a better one.
One more thing worth knowing: once any ship is S-class, its tech inventory can be expanded to 60 slots regardless of type. So the slot differences between types apply to cargo, not tech, at the top end.
Optimal Pulse Engine And Launch Thruster Upgrades
Two systems handle your day-to-day flying. The Pulse Engine moves you around a system, and the Launch Thrusters get you off a planet. Both take generated upgrade modules, and both follow the same hard rule: a maximum of three generated modules per technology, per inventory. Install a fourth and all of them shut off until you remove one. Three is the number, always.
Pulse Engine modules
Pulse Engine modules roll up to three bonuses: maneuverability, boost speed, and pulse drive fuel efficiency. Class decides the size of the roll, so an S-class module can give you around +10 to 25% boost speed and +5 to 18% maneuverability, while a C-class module tops out around +10% boost. Named examples from the wiki put it in perspective: a Flawless Impulse Nozzle gives +10% maneuverability, +15% boost, and +20% fuel efficiency, while a Harmonic Thrust Controller might roll +6%, +13%, and +20%.
Buy these modules from the ship scrappers at space stations. They cost nanites, and the stats are hidden until you install them, so save before a buying spree if you're picky.
Outlaw stations sell X-class Pulse Engine modules, and those can out-roll anything legal. An Outlawed Rewired Propulsion Unit hits +20% maneuverability, +29% boost, and +23% efficiency in a single module. The catch is that X-class rolls are a gamble, with a wide range, so you'll open a lot of duds chasing one that good.
Launch Thrusters
Launch cost is a per-hull number, and it's why Explorers feel so cheap to run. Every takeoff drains launch fuel: 25% for a Fighter or Hauler, 16.7% for a Shuttle, 12.5% for an Explorer. It's doubled in Survival and Permadeath, so thruster efficiency matters twice as much there.
Recharging is straightforward. Starship Launch Fuel refills a full 100% per unit, while Uranium only gives 2.5% per unit, so keep the manufactured fuel on hand for long expeditions.
For modules, the Launch Auto-Charger is the standout. It trickle-charges your thrusters at 4% per minute while the ship is parked, which means landing somewhere to scan or mine for a few minutes basically pays for the trip off-world. Efficient Thrusters is the other named tech in this family worth installing, since it cuts the launch cost itself.
Placement actually matters
Tech in the same family gives an adjacency bonus when you put it next to each other, and you'll see the bonus as a colored border around the modules. Cluster the Pulse Engine with its three upgrades in one blob, and do the same for the Launch Thruster family. Supercharged slots, the purple-highlighted ones in your tech inventory, give any tech installed in them a large stat boost, so drop your best modules in those first. On most ships you'll have a few of them, and spending them on engines versus weapons is one of the real build decisions in the game.
Best Weapon Loadouts For Photon Cannon And Cyclotron Ballista
The Photon Cannon is your default gun, and it's better than people give it credit for. It deals 120 base damage per shot to ships, fauna, and destructible objects like reinforced doors. Hit an enemy ship from behind and that becomes 4x damage, 480 effective, so positioning doubles your firepower more cheaply than any module. It's also your mining tool at 24 mining power per shot, though you have better options for that on the Multi-tool.
The Cyclotron Ballista is the specialist's pick. Each volley throws two slow plasma balls that hit for 700 base damage, the second-highest per-projectile hit in the game behind only the Rocket Launcher. Rear hits on ships deal 2x, so 1,400 per volley. It fires about 3.33 volleys per second but overheats after just 4 volleys, roughly 0.9 seconds of fire, then needs about 1.6 seconds to recover. The heat gauge doesn't even display properly while firing, so watch for the white sliver on the bar turning red.
Why run both
The two weapons cover each other's weaknesses. The Ballista's charged particles shred shields and can disable a target's engines outright, leaving it dead in space, but the shots are considerably weaker against bare hull armor. The Photon Cannon chews through hulls steadily and never really runs out of uptime. A pretty standard kill loop looks like this: open with the Ballista to strip the shield and stall their engine, then switch to the Photon Cannon and finish them while they're parked.
You build the Ballista from a blueprint with 200 Dioxite and 2 Wiring Looms, so it's cheap to slot into a second weapon hardpoint. Its range is a normal 1,500u, same as most ship weapons, but the slow projectiles make it a close-to-mid range tool in practice.
Upgrade modules for guns
Same rule as engines: three generated weapon modules max per inventory. Photon Cannon modules roll damage, fire rate, and heat dispersion. One quirk worth knowing is that the displayed S-class damage bonus reads 6 to 8% on the panel, but the wiki notes the real bonus used in combat math is 20 to 28%, so the stat screen undersells your actual damage. Don't scrap a module just because the number looks small.
Placement rules apply double here. Put the Photon Cannon and its three modules in one tight cluster, ideally with the best ones in supercharged slots, and give the Ballista its own cluster. A fully stacked weapon in supercharged slots can push peak damage potential past 10,000 DPS, which is overkill for pirates but handy for Sentinel interceptors and freighter raids.
Shield And Hyperdrive Priorities For Range
Your Deflector Shield starts at 165.0 absorption before any hull bonus, and it recharges slowly on its own when it isn't full. In a real fight that trickle is too slow, so you recharge it manually with Sodium, Sodium Nitrate, or Starshield Batteries. Keep a stack of batteries in the ship inventory, because the moment the shield drops you start taking hull damage and that's when fights go sideways. If a shield tech breaks entirely, fixing one takes 50 Chromatic Metal and 13 Sodium Nitrate.
For modules, Deflector Shield Upgrades and Ablative Armour sit in the same family, so cluster them around the base shield tech for the adjacency bonus. Haulers get the biggest native shield bonus, but any hull can be pushed to a comfortable tankiness with three good modules. You don't need to max this on an Explorer unless you're flying through pirate systems a lot, since running away in a fast warper is usually cheaper than tanking.
Hyperdrive is all about stacking
The base Hyperdrive jumps 101 light-years, which sounds like plenty until you're trying to cross 600,000 of them to the core. Everything after that comes from stacking.
Hyperdrive modules add flat light-years of range, scaled by class. C and B-class modules add 50 to 100 ly, A-class 115 to 165 ly, and S-class 165 to 265 ly. Outlaw X-class modules can spike as high as 320 ly, but with the same gamble as all X-class tech. A-class and S-class modules also add +100% warp cell efficiency each, and that bonus stacks: one module drops fuel cost to 50%, two to 33%, three to 25%. The wiki's figure for a fully upgraded drive is about 2,200 ly of range with three S-class modules, or 2,500 with X-class ones, and ten jumps from a single warp cell.
Placement is a real multiplier here. Cadmium, Emeril, and Indium Drives all add range when installed adjacent to the Hyperdrive and its modules, on top of unlocking their star colors. So build one tight hyperdrive block: the core tech, the three upgrade modules, and the color drives touching it all.
The color drives matter for where you can go. Cadmium unlocks red stars, Emeril green, and Indium blue, and the Indium Drive covers red and green access on its own, so it's the one long-term drive worth building. An S-class Explorer hull with three S-class range modules and an Indium Drive is the classic long-range build, and it's hard to beat.
Salvaged Frigate Modules Worth Chasing
Starship tech gets you most of the way, but the freighter side of your operation runs on Salvaged Frigate Modules, or SFMs. You trade them at the Upgrade Control terminal on your freighter's bridge for blueprints, and there is no other way to get most of that tech. Everything together costs 81 of them, which sounds grim until you realize you don't need everything.

The priority order here is pretty clear. The Matter Beam, which teleports you straight to your freighter from anywhere in the system, costs 5 SFMs and changes your daily loop more than anything else on the list. The Interstellar Scanner at 4 makes finding your freighter trivial. The freighter hyperdrive line is the big one at 48 total, and it's what lets your capital ship warp across huge distances with you, but it's a long-term project, not a first purchase. The decorative base parts at 12 are pure cosmetics, so they can wait forever.
Where the modules actually come from
The drop rates are low everywhere, but some sources give you many more chances per hour than others.
Crashed freighter sites give a 7.5% chance per storage unit you crack open, and a single crash site has a bunch of units. That's the reliable on-planet farm. Derelict freighters are arguably better: the per-crate rate is only 2.5%, but a derelict is wall-to-wall crates, and players who run them regularly average roughly one SFM per run. You'll also grab upgrade modules and nanites down there, so the trip pays for itself.
Frigate expeditions are the passive source. Industrial-type missions have a 7 to 20% chance to return one depending on difficulty, so once you have a few frigates flying, they trickle in while you do other things. Nexus missions award one about 4% of the time, regular mission board jobs run 2 to 4%, and pirate boards sit around 2%.
The sneaky-fast option is freighter cargo pods at 1% each. Around outlaw stations there are pods parked everywhere, and you can swoop along inspecting them without firing a shot, only popping the ones that scan as worthwhile. Grabbing them does earn a wanted level 2 with Sentinel ships in normal systems, but in outlaw systems nobody cares. An Infra-Knife Accelerator clears pods quickly if you do go loud, and the gold and platinum spilling out of them is a nice side income. Each SFM is also worth 95,000 units if you'd rather sell a spare, though you'll want every one you find for that 48-module hyperdrive grind.
One freebie most players miss: since the Orbital update, Merchants Guild envoys at rank 10 and Explorers Guild envoys at rank 8 will just hand you an SFM. If you've been doing guild missions anyway, check the envoy before you buy anything.
So the short version: park a Fighter in a wealthy Vy'keen system until an S-class lands, stack three S-class weapon and engine modules in tight clusters on the supercharged slots, and put your first five Salvaged Frigate Modules into the Matter Beam before anything else. That single build handles pirates, Sentinels, and the long drive to the core without needing a second ship.
