Mass Effect 2 Suicide Mission Guide: Loyalty and Survival Checklist
How to keep every squadmate and the Normandy's crew alive through Mass Effect 2's final mission - loyalty, upgrades, and role picks explained.
The Suicide Mission has a scary reputation, but it's honestly one of the most predictable finales BioWare ever shipped. Nobody dies because you aimed badly. People die because you skipped a loyalty mission, flew a stock Normandy through the Omega 4 Relay, or put the wrong person on vent duty. Every death in this mission traces back to a check the game runs against your save file, and every one of those checks can be passed ahead of time. So treat this as a checklist, work through it before you touch that relay, and the whole team walks out. Here's everything that actually matters.
Recruitment and Loyalty Requirements
You want a full roster before the endgame: twelve squadmates total. Ten come from the story (Miranda, Jacob, Mordin, Garrus, Jack, Grunt, Tali, Samara, Thane, Legion), plus Zaeed and Kasumi from the DLC. Both DLC characters are baked into Legendary Edition, so LE players get all twelve by default. You can technically run the finale short-handed, but every missing body makes the late-game defense math (more on that below) hurt a little more.
The story gates your recruiting. The first four dossiers (Garrus, Jack, Mordin, Grunt's tank) unlock right away, and once you've handled those, Horizon forces itself on you. After Horizon you get the Tali, Thane, and Samara dossiers, then the Collector Ship, and finally the derelict Reaper where you pick up Legion. Loyalty missions open up after Horizon, and they drip out on a schedule: finishing any mission with a "Mission Complete" screen makes the next loyalty mission available. Small errands aboard the Normandy or on hub worlds like Omega and the Citadel don't count toward that trigger, which is why loyalty missions can feel like they unlock randomly. They don't, it's just slow.
Loyalty does three things: it unlocks the character's fourth power and alternate outfit, and it's the single biggest factor in who survives the finale. The order the missions unlock in is Jacob, Miranda, Jack, Mordin, Grunt, Garrus, Samara, Tali, Thane, Legion. Zaeed's and Kasumi's loyalty missions are their dossier missions, so those two are available the moment you recruit them, even before Horizon. Free loyalty, no reason to skip it.
A few loyalty missions can be flubbed, so pay attention:
- Tali (Treason): never present the evidence against her father. The trial ends and Tali stays bitter instead of loyal.
- Zaeed (The Price of Revenge): if you save the trapped workers instead of chasing Vido, you need a high Paragon score to talk Zaeed down afterward. Fail that check and his loyalty is gone.
- Thane (Sins of the Father): keep updating Thane while you tail the politician. Lose the target and Kolyat's kill costs you the loyalty.
- Samara (The Ardat-Yakshi): you have to actually hold Morinth's attention in the club. Lose her interest and Samara goes home un-loyal.
Two pairings will also pick a fight on the ship once both halves are loyal: Jack versus Miranda, and Tali versus Legion. You'll be pulled in to settle it, and siding with one drops the other's loyalty unless you can pass a Charm or Intimidate check. If your persuasion option is greyed out, you pick a side and eat the loss (you can win the snubbed one back later with another persuasion conversation, but it's a pain). Moral of the story: keep your Paragon or Renegade bar high before these arguments fire.
One last trap, and it's the meanest one in the game. After the Reaper IFF mission, do NOT touch the galaxy map until you've gone downstairs, activated Legion, and talked to him a second time. If all your other major missions are done, using the map is what triggers the Collectors boarding the Normandy and stealing your crew. Legion's loyalty mission is the one free mission you can still run after the IFF, but only if you wake him up first. Miss that and you're choosing between Legion's loyalty and the crew's lives.
(Samara's replacement Morinth, if you take that dark turn on Omega, joins already loyal. No extra work needed, though you did just murder a justicar for it.)
Ship Upgrades Before the Relay
Three Normandy upgrades decide whether people survive the flight to the Collector Base, and only these three. Everything else in the research menu (weapon damage, ammo capacity, med-bay, all of it) is combat comfort and nothing more.
| Upgrade | Unlocked by | Cost | Skip it and... | |---|---|---|---| | Heavy Ship Armor (Silaris) | Talk to Jacob | 15,000 Palladium | Jack dies when a laser cuts through the hull | | Multicore Shielding | Talk to Tali | 15,000 Palladium | Someone dies when the drive core overloads in the debris field | | Thanix Cannon | Talk to Garrus | 15,000 Platinum | Someone dies in the dogfight with the Collector Cruiser |
Nice part: you don't need anyone's loyalty for these. Just ask Jacob, Tali, and Garrus about "Normandy Upgrades" in conversation (under Investigate) and the research options open up. Their loyalty missions unlock the same research if you'd rather wait, but talking is free and takes a minute.
The deaths happen in a fixed order during the approach. No armor means Jack gets vaporized before you even fight the Oculus. No shielding means a squadmate gets caught in the drive core overload mid-mission, and the game picks from this priority list: Kasumi, then Legion, Tali, Thane, Garrus, Zaeed, Grunt, then Samara or Morinth. Sneaky detail: whoever you bring into the cargo bay for the Oculus fight is safe from that check, so you can bodyguard one specific person by putting them in your squad. No Thanix means a death during the cruiser dogfight at the end of the approach (Thane first, then Garrus, Zaeed, Grunt, Jack, Samara/Morinth), and that one happens after the cargo bay, so there's no dodging it.
Cost-wise you're looking at 30,000 palladium and 15,000 platinum total, which is a scanning chore but not a brutal one. If the probing is making you miserable, Miranda's Advanced Mineral Scanner upgrade (15,000 iridium) doubles your scanner speed and makes the whole grind way more tolerable. Buy the three survival upgrades before you do anything else with your minerals.
And to be blunt about the deadline: the Omega 4 Relay is the point of no return. The game flat-out warns you through Joker and the crew if you're not ready, so if characters are muttering about the ship being weak, listen to them. Hit the relay in a stock Normandy and you're guaranteed at least one casket.
Choosing Specialist Roles
Once you're inside the Collector Base, the mission starts handing out jobs, and this is where loyalty plus the right specialist for the right job keeps everybody breathing.
The vent run (Infiltration). Someone has to crawl through a hot duct while your squad fights to the doors. Pick a loyal Tali, Legion, or Kasumi. Those three are the only real tech experts, and if the person you send isn't one of them, or isn't loyal, they get shot at the door at the end of the section. The second half of the check is your first fireteam leader: pick a loyal Garrus, Jacob, or Miranda. A wrong or disloyal leader gets the vent specialist killed even if your vent pick was perfect, so this is a two-part check. During the run itself, hit the gate valves fast, because a heat timer ticks down and letting it empty is a mission failure. (Activating a gate resets the timer, so if you're near one and enemies are up, kill a bit more first.)
The biotic bubble (The Long Walk). Seeker swarms line the only route forward, so a biotic has to hold a protective field the whole way. It has to be a loyal Samara, Morinth, or Jack. Miranda volunteers for the job and she's wrong, the game just doesn't tell you that. Pick anyone else, or a disloyal biotic, and the bubble fails at the end: the specialist survives but one of the two squadmates you brought gets swarmed. The victim comes from a fixed order (Thane, Jack, Garrus, Legion, Grunt, Samara, Jacob, Mordin, Tali, Kasumi, Zaeed, Morinth), and Miranda can't die here, so if she's in your squad the other person always eats it.
Second fireteam leader. Same drill as the first one: Garrus, Jacob, or Miranda. The twist is that this time the leader is the one at risk, and Miranda is special-cased. She survives leading the second team even if you never did her loyalty mission. Garrus and Jacob still need to be loyal. Zaeed, tough as he is, is not a valid leader despite what some old flowcharts claim, and picking him means watching him die in Shepard's arms.
Crew escort. After you pop the pods, someone has to walk the Normandy crew back to the ship. Any loyal squadmate works, except Miranda, who isn't offered the job. Sending a disloyal escort means the crew lives but the escort dies. Sending nobody means the crew dies, period. The smart play is sending one of your weak defenders (Mordin is the classic pick, more on why in a second).
Your final squad. Whoever you bring to the Human-Reaper fight needs to be loyal, full stop. A disloyal squadmate here survives the shooting and then dies in the escape cutscene anyway. The clever move is bringing the squishy loyal people with you: Jack, Kasumi, Tali, Mordin. They're safe at your side, and it thins out the weakest people from the group left on defense.
The Hold-the-Line Calculation
While you're off shooting a giant robot skeleton, everyone you didn't assign stays behind to hold the line. This is the most math-y check in the game. Each defender has a hidden score, the game averages the group, and if the average comes up short, people start dying.
The tiers, using the numbers from Game Informer's official flowchart that most calculators still go by:
| Score | Squadmates | |---|---| | 4 | Garrus, Grunt, Zaeed | | 2 | Thane, Legion, Jacob, Miranda, Samara/Morinth | | 1 | Jack, Kasumi, Tali, Mordin |
A squadmate who isn't loyal loses a point. Aim for a group average of 2 or better and the whole group lives. Edge cases at the bottom get fuzzy (players pulling the game apart have measured slightly different cutoffs), but the tiers themselves are solid, so build around them.
If the average falls short, deaths come in a fixed order: any disloyal defenders first, then Mordin, Tali, Kasumi, Jack, Miranda, Jacob, Garrus, Samara/Morinth, Legion, Thane, Zaeed, Grunt. That's why Mordin is the perennial victim. He's worth 1 point and he's first on the chopping block, a brutal combo.
Here's the standard everyone-lives split with a full twelve-person roster:
- Vent: Tali. First leader: Garrus.
- Biotic: Samara. Second leader: Jacob.
- Escort: Mordin.
- Your squad: Shepard, Jack, and Kasumi.
- Holding the line: Miranda, Thane, Legion, Grunt, Zaeed.
That defense group scores 2+2+2+4+4 = 14 across five people, an average of 2.8. Comfortably clear, nobody dies.
Now flip it. Same setup, but you bring Grunt and Zaeed with you to the final fight instead of Jack and Kasumi, and Garrus is your escort instead of Mordin. Now the hold-the-line group is Miranda, Thane, Legion, Mordin, Jack, Kasumi: 9 points across six people, average 1.5. That's a failure, and the game kills someone (Mordin, obviously) while you're upstairs fighting the Reaper. Taking the tanks with you feels safe and it starves the exact group that needed them.
The wiki's rule of thumb holds up: leave two of the strong trio (Garrus, Grunt, Zaeed) on defense and a full-strength team usually clears the bar. If you've already lost people earlier in the mission, or you sent Grunt home with the crew, do the math again before you pick your final squad. That squad select screen is your last lever.
One more thing worth knowing: if fewer than two squadmates are alive when the base blows, nobody's left to pull Shepard aboard, and Shepard dies with the station. That ending locks the save out of importing into Mass Effect 3. So even a sloppy run should be steered toward keeping at least two bodies standing.
Keeping the Crew Alive
The Normandy's crew is a separate survival track from the squad, and it runs on a clock you can't see. The moment the Collectors board the ship and abduct everyone but Joker, a counter starts. Every mission or N7 assignment you run before hitting the relay advances it.
- Zero missions: go straight through the Omega 4 Relay and the entire crew survives.
- One to three missions: half the crew dies. That includes Kelly, Gabby, Ken, and Gardner.
- Four or more missions: every crew member dies except Dr. Chakwas.
The game shows you the damage when you reach the pods. Go in immediately and it's Lilith from Horizon in that first pod, liquefied in front of you. Show up late and it's Kelly in there instead. Arrive way too late and you're opening pods of goo with one very angry doctor left alive. It's one of the meanest bits of feedback in the game, and the only fix is not being late in the first place.
Two mercy clauses in the counter. Shipboard stuff and hub-world errands (Omega, Illium, the Citadel, Tuchanka) don't tick the clock, so you can still shop, chat, and grab upgrades before jumping. And Legion's loyalty mission doesn't cost you anything, because you run it before the abduction even happens, provided you activated him before touching the galaxy map like we covered earlier. That's the whole trick to a perfect run: Legion's mission is deliberately last in the loyalty order, do it after the IFF, wake him first, then sprint for the relay.
Inside the base, the crew's fate is all about the escort choice. Send a loyal squadmate back with them and everyone makes it home. Send a disloyal one and the crew lives while the escort drops. Don't send one and the crew gets left to die when the base goes up. Mordin is the textbook pick: he's loyal, he's worth almost nothing on defense, and escort duty pulls him entirely out of the death-order queue back at the line. One menu choice, three problems solved.
So the full crew checklist looks like this: all twelve squadmates recruited, all twelve loyal (mind the four flubbable missions and the two shipboard arguments), three ship upgrades bought, Legion activated before the galaxy map, his loyalty mission done before the jump, relay immediately after the abduction, loyal escort sent with the crew. Do all that and the ending walkthrough shows the whole team standing on the Normandy, Kelly strolling past in the background, and the No One Left Behind achievement popping. Skip the relay sprint and Kelly's pod is on you.
