Mass Effect 2 Loyalty Missions Guide: Unlocks and Conflict Resolution
Every loyalty mission trigger, both squad fight fixes, and the prep that keeps the whole team alive through the suicide mission.
Mass Effect 2 is half shooter and half hiring sim. You spend the game collecting a crew of deeply messed-up specialists, and every single one of them walks in carrying a personal problem they can't shake. Fix that problem and they go loyal, which hands you a bonus power, an alternate outfit, and a much better shot at everyone walking back out of the Collector Base.
The system has teeth, though. Two pairs of squadmates will nearly come to blows on your own ship, four loyalty missions can be failed outright, and the finale quietly grades every choice you made. Here's how all of it fits together.
Recruiting Squadmates
Miranda and Jacob come with the package - they're with you from the opening act. Everyone else arrives through dossier missions the Illusive Man feeds you. The first batch is four hires, all available as soon as you reach Omega: the Professor (Mordin), Archangel (Garrus), the Convict (Jack), and the Warlord (Grunt). Finish that batch and the game yanks you to Horizon for a story beat whether you like it or not.
| Character | Dossier | Where to get them | | --- | --- | --- | | Miranda Lawson | Story start | On your team from the beginning | | Jacob Taylor | Story start | On your team from the beginning | | Zaeed Massani (DLC) | Dossier: The Veteran | Omega, right where you dock | | Kasumi Goto (DLC) | Dossier: The Master Thief | Citadel, Zakera Ward | | Mordin Solus | Dossier: The Professor | Omega, in the goplague district | | Garrus Vakarian | Dossier: Archangel | Omega, behind enemy lines | | Jack | Dossier: The Convict | Purgatory prison ship | | Grunt | Dossier: The Warlord | Korlus | | Tali'Zorah | Dossier: Tali | Haestrom, after Horizon | | Thane Krios | Dossier: The Assassin | Illium, after Horizon | | Samara | Dossier: The Justicar | Illium, after Horizon | | Legion | Reaper IFF mission | Derelict Reaper, late game |
A few of these have wrinkles. Grunt doesn't actually join when Korlus ends - he sits in the cargo hold in his tank until you go down and talk him into it, and plenty of players just never do. The DLC pair is the opposite: recruit Zaeed on Omega or Kasumi on the Citadel and their loyalty missions are live the moment they step aboard, hours before anyone else's.
After Horizon the second batch opens up (Tali, Thane, Samara), and once you clear five more missions the Collector Ship story beat fires automatically. Legion is the weird one. You find him powered down on the derelict Reaper during the Reaper IFF mission, which is the game's point of no return. Bring him back, then wake him in the Normandy's AI core - miss that step and he never joins at all, and a lot of first-timers finish the game without realizing he was on the roster.
Can you skip recruits? Sure, and whoever you never hired can't die in the finale. But the clean ending (and the No One Left Behind achievement) wants a full squad brought home, so grab everyone.
Triggering Loyalty Missions
Loyalty missions don't unlock on a timer or a level. The trigger is a finished mission: after Horizon, complete any mission or assignment that ends with a full "Mission Complete" summary screen, and your squadmates will start lining up to talk. Kelly Chambers usually flags it for you ("Jack wants to see you on the crew deck"). Small hub busywork - shopping runs, chats on the Citadel - doesn't count as a trigger. Only the real summary screens do.
They unlock in a fixed order: Jacob, Miranda, Jack, Mordin, Grunt, Garrus, Samara, Tali, Thane, Legion. If someone in that line hasn't been recruited yet, their slot gets skipped and the next person's mission comes up instead. Zaeed and Kasumi sit outside the order entirely since theirs are ready on arrival.
There's also a shortcut worth knowing. For Grunt, Tali, Thane, Samara, and Legion specifically: if everyone else is already recruited and every other loyalty mission is done, their mission unlocks the moment they join the crew. That's the trick that makes Legion usable - wake him after the Reaper IFF and his mission is ready basically immediately, since it's the only thing left on the board.
What loyalty actually gets you
Each loyal squadmate unlocks their fourth power plus an alternate outfit, and the table below shows the payoffs. Shepard can borrow any one of these through the Advanced Training research project - only one at a time, so pick carefully. That's the real draw of loyalty missions beyond the story: a Soldier rocking Warp Ammo or an Adept with Energy Drain is a different animal.
| Character | Loyalty mission | Power unlocked | | --- | --- | --- | | Jacob | The Gift of Greatness | Barrier | | Miranda | The Prodigal | Slam | | Jack | Subject Zero | Warp Ammo | | Mordin | Old Blood | Neural Shock | | Grunt | Rite of Passage | Fortification | | Garrus | Eye for an Eye | Armor-Piercing Ammo | | Samara / Morinth | The Ardat-Yakshi | Reave / Dominate | | Tali | Treason | Energy Drain | | Thane | Sins of the Father | Shredder Ammo | | Legion | A House Divided | Geth Shield Boost | | Zaeed | The Price of Revenge | Inferno Grenade | | Kasumi | Stealing Memory | Flashbang Grenade |
The missions you can actually fail
Most of these end with loyalty no matter what you decide. Spare Sidonis or let Garrus take his shot - either way he's loyal. Save or burn Maelon's genophage data, rescue Oriana or botch it, rewrite or destroy the heretic geth: same deal, loyalty secured. The choices matter plenty for Mass Effect 3, just not for the loyalty flag.
Four missions can genuinely go sideways:
- Samara - The Ardat-Yakshi. This one's a no-combat hunt for her serial-killer daughter. You have to impress Morinth in the Afterlife club (roughly four activities - defending the dancer, buying the bar a round, backing down the krogan, and so on), then hold her interest in the booth by talking art, travel, and drugs. Slip up and she walks. Mission failed, Samara stays disloyal. The final choice between Samara and Morinth also decides which power you get: Reave or Dominate.
- Thane - Sins of the Father. You shadow a corrupt politician from the rafters while Thane's son hunts him. You have to keep radioing updates on the target's position. Lose him and the mark ends up dead the wrong way, and Thane's loyalty is gone.
- Tali - Treason. The trial on the Migrant Fleet hands you evidence that would clear Tali by condemning her dead father. Present it and she's exonerated but furious - no loyalty. Your outs: a Charm/Intimidate speech about Tali's character, flat-out lying that you found nothing (she's exiled but loyal), or, if you sent Veetor back to the fleet and kept Kal'Reegar alive on Haestrom, rallying the crowd directly.
- Zaeed - The Price of Revenge. Halfway through you choose between chasing Zaeed's target or saving trapped factory workers. Chase, and loyalty's yours but the workers cook. Save them and you'd better pass a pretty steep Charm check back on the ship, or Zaeed stays bitter and disloyal.
Resolving Squad Conflicts
Finish both missions for either of these pairs and the fight starts the next time you're back on the Normandy. No warning, no way to postpone once you're through the door.
Jack vs Miranda. Jack finds out Cerberus ran the Pragia facility that tortured her as a kid and demands answers from the woman who still works for them. Tali vs Legion. Tali catches Legion scanning her omni-tool so it can beam Migrant Fleet data back to the geth.
Same shape both times. A blue or red persuade option settles it and keeps both of them loyal. Pick a side instead and whoever you snub drops to disloyal on the spot. There's no neutral option, and if the persuade choices are grayed out, you're choosing a side whether you like it or not.
Losing someone's loyalty isn't permanent, which is the part most players miss. Go find them afterward for a private conversation and there's another persuade check to win them back, and that follow-up check runs a little cheaper than the original one did. You keep their outfit and bonus power either way - loyalty mostly decides whether the finale trusts them with specialist work.
The wrinkle is romance. To lock in a romance with one of these four, you have to side with them in the argument instead of taking the persuade route. So a Tali romance means telling Legion to knock it off, then dragging your Paragon or Renegade score up high enough to charm a machine back into loyalty. Also worth knowing: whoever you sided against stops responding to romantic overtures later, even if you repair the loyalty.
One more thing the community has mapped: the two fights don't cost the same on each axis. Jack/Miranda's Renegade check is much cheaper than its Paragon one, and it flips for Tali/Legion - Paragon gets the easy pass there. Renegade runs the cheap fix for the Cerberus argument, Paragon runs it for the geth spat. Whichever lane you ride, one of the two showdowns is going to ask a lot.
Since the fight only triggers once both missions are done, you control the clock. Park the second mission of a pair until your morality score is fat, then clear it. The confrontation can't fire before both boxes are ticked.
Choosing Paragon or Renegade Checks
Mass Effect 2 threw out the old Charm and Intimidate skills from the first game. Whether a persuade option is even selectable now runs on your point totals, and the math is sneakier than it looks.
The game takes your Paragon score (or your Renegade score, checked separately), divides it by the maximum you could have collected up to that point in the story, and compares that percentage against a threshold the conversation requires. Two things fall out of that. Checks stay passable all game, because the bar moves with you. And splitting your points between blue and red is how you fail both sides - a balanced 50/50 Shepard routinely can't pass either version of the hard checks, since each pool stands alone.
So the practical advice is boring but true: pick a lane and stay in it. The top-right and bottom-right dialogue positions are where the paragon and renegade replies live, and picking them steadily is what keeps your ratio healthy. Interrupts count too. N7 assignments, DLC missions, and little acts of heroism or menace on the hubs are all point piñatas - clear a few between story beats and the checks stay open.
A couple of boosts help if you're struggling:
- Import a Mass Effect 1 save and you can carry up to 190 points into each bar. You don't even need full ME1 bars - nine of sixteen blocks (56.25%) gets the maximum transfer.
- Max out your class skill and evolve it. The evolved branches multiply the morality points you earn, +70% on one branch and +100% on the other. For a persuade-heavy run, that's the single biggest lever you control.
The notoriously steep checks, in case you're wondering what's coming: the speech in Morinth's apartment at the end of Samara's mission, the Paragon route on Jack/Miranda, the Renegade route on Tali/Legion, and Zaeed's post-rescue Charm if you saved the workers. If a check is grayed out, don't panic-click through. Reload an earlier save, bank some points, and come back - or take the side you care less about and win the other one back later at the discounted rate.
Preparing for the Final Mission
The suicide mission plays like a cinematic gauntlet but grades like a spreadsheet. Every death has a cause and there are no random rolls: loyalty, ship upgrades, job assignments, and timing all feed a hidden score under the hood. Prep in the right order and everyone lives, including you.
Before the Reaper IFF
Treat the Reaper IFF mission as your soft deadline. Before you fly it: recruit all twelve, finish every loyalty mission except Legion's (his comes after), settle both ship fights, buy the ship upgrades below, and make a manual save. After the IFF you get a short grace window - wake Legion in the AI core, run his mission, then commit. Once the Collectors snatch your crew, the clock is running and every mission you run costs lives.
Three Normandy research upgrades decide who survives the approach, and loyalty can't save anyone from a missing one. You have to ask the right crewmate about ship upgrades to unlock each:
| Upgrade | Unlocked by | Skip it and | | --- | --- | --- | | Heavy Ship Armor (Silaris) | Talk to Jacob | A Collector beam punches through and kills Jack | | Multicore Shielding (Cyclonic) | Talk to Tali | The drive core overload kills someone - Kasumi, then Legion, then Tali first in line | | Thanix Cannon | Talk to Garrus | The Collector cruiser picks someone off - Thane first, then Garrus |
The crew clock
After the abduction, go straight through the Omega-4 Relay. Zero missions completed and the whole crew comes home. One to three missions and half of them die, Kelly Chambers included. Four or more and only Dr. Chakwas is left breathing. Travel time and menu idling don't matter - only completed missions and assignments tick this counter.
Job assignments inside the Collector Base
Each stage checks whether your pick is the right kind of specialist and whether they're loyal. Both boxes or someone dies.
| Job | Safe picks | Notes | | --- | --- | --- | | Vent specialist | Loyal Tali, Legion, or Kasumi | Tech experts only | | First fireteam leader | Loyal Garrus, Jacob, or Miranda | A wrong or disloyal leader gets the vent runner killed | | Biotic specialist | Loyal Jack, Samara, or Morinth | Anyone else and the seeker swarms take a squadmate - Thane's first in line | | Second fireteam leader | Loyal Garrus, Jacob, or Miranda | Wrong pick dies personally this time | | Crew escort | Any loyal squadmate | Mordin's the classic send | | Final squad | Any two loyal squadmates | Disloyal picks die after the Human-Reaper fight |
The last stand is the part people botch. While you fight the Human-Reaper, everyone else holds the line, and each defender carries a hidden score: Grunt, Zaeed, and Garrus are worth 4, Thane, Legion, Jacob, Miranda, and Samara or Morinth are worth 2, and Jack, Kasumi, Tali, and Mordin are worth 1. Being disloyal costs a point. If the group averages above 2, everybody lives; below that the deaths start with Mordin, then Tali, then Kasumi.
That's why Mordin goes with the crew - he's your weakest defender, and escort duty pulls him out of the math entirely. And it's why the squishy-but-loyal crowd (Jack, Kasumi, Tali) rides along to the final boss: they live if loyal, and removing them from the pool props up the average back at the door. Leave Garrus, Grunt, and Zaeed behind on defense and that average isn't dropping below 2 no matter who else is standing there.
One last check the game runs: Shepard makes the final jump only if at least two squadmates are still alive. Get everything above right and that's never in doubt - full loyalty, three upgrades, straight through the relay after the abduction, and the whole roster walks home.
