Hollow Knight Geo Farming Guide: Best Ways to Earn Currency Fast
Where to farm Geo at each stage of the game, how eggs, grubs, and relics pay out, and which upgrades to buy first.
Geo runs pretty much everything in Hollow Knight. Nail reforging, charms, maps, lanterns, stag tolls - it all drains the same wallet, and the price tags only go up. Fully upgrading the nail costs 7,050 Geo. Buying out every shop in the game sits somewhere around 69,000. The catch is that dying dumps your whole stash on the floor and leaves a grumpy ghost of you standing over it. Earning fast is half the job. Keeping what you earned is the other half, and that half has real tricks to it.
Best Early Geo Routes
The Husk Guard loop
Two Husk Guards live in the Forgotten Crossroads - one just east of the False Knight arena, the other near the northern Crystal Peak entrance. Each drops 45 Geo, which is a silly payout for that point in the game, and 54 with Fragile Greed equipped. Both stand a short hop from the Crossroads bench and stag station.
The loop is about as simple as farming gets. Kill both guards, sit on the bench to respawn everything, run back, repeat. That's 90 Geo per cycle with almost no travel time, and their swings are slow enough to punish even with a starting nail. Resting at any bench brings regular enemies back, so this well never runs dry.
One heads-up: after your first Dreamer kill, the Crossroads turns infected. The guard near False Knight gets swallowed by the growth and stops being fightable. The northeast one sticks around, but by then you'll have moved on to richer farms anyway.
Relics are the real early money
Honestly, raw enemy grinding is the slow way to get rich. Relics are the fast way. Relic Seeker Lemm in the City of Tears buys Wanderer's Journals for 200, Hallownest Seals for 450, King's Idols for 800, and Arcane Eggs for 1,200. Every relic hidden across a full run adds up to 21,650 Geo.
The detail that changes everything: relics don't drop when you die. Geo does. So keep your savings in relic form and cash out at Lemm's counter right before a big purchase. A pocket full of old junk you found poking around Greenpath beats a fat coin stack you can lose to one bad jump.
Two smaller income notes while you're at it. The shiny Geo deposits and chests scattered around are one-time pickups, so treat them as bonuses rather than income. And grubs pay cash the moment you free them - more on that in the Grubfather section below.
Bigger farms as the game opens up
| Route | Where | Payout | Notes | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Husk Guard loop | Forgotten Crossroads | 90 per bench cycle | 45 each, 54 with Greed | | Sentry sweep | City of Tears | 50 per Great Husk Sentry, 80 with Greed | Seven of them, three in the Watcher's Spire | | Trial of the Conqueror | Colosseum of Fools | 2,000-2,020 per clear | 450 to unlock once, repeats are free | | Trial of the Fool | Colosseum of Fools | 3,000-3,020 per clear | 800 to unlock once | | Dirtcarver grind | Failed Tramway, Deepnest | 6 per kill, 12 with Greed | A new one crawls out about every 4 seconds, forever |
The Colosseum is the headline. Unlock fees are 100, 450, and 800 for the three trials, paid once each. After that, every clear pays the same Geo forever - roughly 1,000, 2,000, and 3,000 - and the Trial of the Conqueror is generally the fastest repeatable farm in the game. Enemies inside trials drop nothing themselves, so the clear reward is the whole paycheck.
The Failed Tramway is the low-effort option. Dirtcarvers have 20 health and crawl out of the ground about four seconds after each kill, endlessly. Park yourself in a good spot with Fragile Greed or Unbreakable Greed on and the coins tick up while you barely move.
Grab the one-time piles too. The Gorgeous Husk in the City of Tears drops 420 Geo (504 with Greed). And in Kingdom's Edge, break a wall in the spike-pit room with a Great Hopper to find the largest Geo deposit in the game, worth another 420. That one ignores Greed, so don't expect a boost.
Using Rancid Eggs Efficiently
What an egg actually does
On a normal run, a Rancid Egg has exactly one use: give it to Confessor Jiji and she summons your Shade from wherever it's sulking to her cave in Dirtmouth. You still have to beat the shade to get your Geo and your SOUL meter back, but that beats hiking back through half of Hallownest.
Jiji's door sits on the east edge of Dirtmouth and takes a Simple Key to open. Sly sells a key for 950 if you haven't found a spare.
Where eggs come from
- Scattered pickups: four in the Royal Waterways, three in Crystal Peak, three in Deepnest, two each in the City of Tears and Kingdom's Edge, and one each in Greenpath, the Fungal Wastes, Queen's Gardens, and the Resting Grounds.
- The Grubfather gives you one at 16 grubs saved.
- Sly sells exactly one for 60. Cheapest egg in the game.
- Bluggsacs in the Royal Waterways burst into an egg when killed. They stay dead, though - no bench respawn - so treat those as finite.
- Tuk, deep in the Royal Waterways, sells unlimited eggs for 80-100 apiece. Once you're holding 80, Tuk refuses to sell more.
When spending one makes sense
So who's an egg actually for? Someone whose shade is stuck somewhere hateful. Past a boss arena, at the bottom of the Abyss, mid-way through a platforming gauntlet, or loaded up with thousands of Geo from a Colosseum streak.
The math is easy. An egg costs 60 to 100 if you buy it. If the shade's holding 3,000 at the far end of a nasty climb, 100 to teleport it to Dirtmouth is a bargain. If it's two rooms from a bench, save the egg and walk.
One warning that ties into the death section below: die again before killing your shade and its Geo is gone for good. Sometimes the egg isn't the lazy option - it's the safe one.
Steel Soul runs flip this whole section around. Jiji gets replaced by Steel Soul Jinn, who buys eggs for 290-449 Geo each. Eggs stop being a recovery tool and become straight merchandise.
Grubfather and Seer Rewards
Grubfather payouts
There are 46 grubs in jars across Hallownest. Rewards count heads saved, not which grubs, so any rescue order works. The Geo ladder starts at 10 for your first grub and climbs to 300 by the 45th, with item milestones mixed in:
| Grubs saved | Reward | | --- | --- | | 5 | Mask Shard | | 10 | Grubsong charm | | 16 | Rancid Egg | | 23 | Hallownest Seal | | 31 | Pale Ore | | 38 | King's Idol | | 46 | Grubberfly's Elegy |
Every grub between those milestones pays Geo. Your first nine grubs net a Mask Shard plus 360 Geo, which is real money while you're still saving for a lantern. All 46 together pay 6,750 straight cash, and the Seal plus Idol can go to Lemm for another 1,250 - a clean 8,000 total.
Finding them is mostly a listening exercise. Grubs cry faintly through the walls when you're close, so play with sound on and follow the sniffling. Beat the Collector in the Tower of Love and you get his map, which marks every unfreed grub on maps you own. Worth doing before you sweep the endgame areas.
Seer payouts
The Seer in the Resting Grounds trades Essence milestones for gear, and two of them are basically cash:
| Essence | Reward | | --- | --- | | 100 | Hallownest Seal (sells for 450) | | 200 | Spirits' Glade opens | | 300 | Pale Ore | | 500 | Dream Wielder charm | | 700 | Vessel Fragment | | 900 | Dreamgate | | 1,200 | Arcane Egg (sells for 1,200) | | 1,500 | Mask Shard | | 1,800 | Awoken Dream Nail | | 2,400 | Ascension achievement |
The money angle: 100 Essence gets you a Seal worth 450, and 1,200 Essence gets an egg worth 1,200. That's 1,650 in relics from visiting one sad moth. The Pale Ore and the fragments are gear you'd otherwise have to hunt down the hard way, and Dreamgate - a free teleport you set yourself - makes every farm loop and shopping trip quicker for the rest of the game.
Essence comes from slashing Whispering Roots with the Dream Nail, beating the warrior dreams at their graves, and reading lingering spirits. There's a root just outside the Seer's door to get you started.
Avoiding Geo Loss on Death
How the shade holds your wallet
When you die, all your Geo goes onto a Shade at (or right before) the spot you fell, and your map gets a pin for it. Until you kill that shade, your SOUL meter stays cracked and caps at 66 charge.
The one rule that really matters: die again before killing the old shade and that first stash is gone forever. The new shade only carries whatever you picked up between the two deaths. Shade recovery comes before boss retries, before pushing deeper, before pretty much everything.
Beating your shade is easier than it sounds:
- The Dream Nail kills it in one hit, always.
- It fights with your own spell loadout, so a late-game shade puts up more of a scrap than an early one.
- Die to a boss and the shade usually parks itself somewhere recoverable outside the arena. Die during a Colosseum trial and it spawns in a safe room west of the warriors' pit.
- Shades also die instantly to hazards like spikes. Acid doesn't count, annoyingly.
Ways to actually protect a stash
Carry relics, not Geo. Worth saying twice, since it's the single best habit in the game: Lemm's relics survive every death, so your savings should live in your item slots until the moment you need to pay.
Spend down before risky stuff. About to attempt a boss for the fifth time? Buy the charm or the notch first, so a loss costs nothing but pride.
Is Millibelle's bank worth touching? Weirdly, yes - but only because of the trick. Opening an account costs 100 (that fee never comes back), she holds up to 4,500, deposits survive death, and you can withdraw anytime. Keep her under 2,550 total and she sits there being a real bank forever. Let her hold 2,550 or more, though, and the next time you rest at a bench or ride a stag, she vanishes to the Pleasure House hot spring in the City of Tears. Chase her down (the door takes a Simple Key) and smack her around the spring - she spits out roughly 1.5x what you deposited, up to about 6,834 on a maxed account. Pick the coins up as they drop, since she stops paying once 81 pieces are littering the floor.
So yes, the scam is secretly a 50% return if you trip it on purpose. Drop 4,500 with her, bench once, go collect about 6,750. Just have that spare Simple Key in hand before you start.
Two smaller oddities worth knowing. Dying in the White Palace releases no shade at all, so your Geo stays with you - though Fragile charms still break there, so leave them unequipped. And there's a rare bug where dying to spikes while your body slides into the next room spawns no shade, and your Geo looks lost. Jiji can still summon it, which is the one fix.
Spending Geo on Upgrades
The nail comes first
| Upgrade | Geo cost | Pale Ore | Damage | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Sharpened Nail | 250 | 0 | 9 | | Channelled Nail | 800 | 1 | 13 | | Coiled Nail | 2,000 | 2 | 17 | | Pure Nail | 4,000 | 3 | 21 |
The first reforge is the best 250 Geo in the game. Damage jumps from 5 to 9, an 80% bump, with no Pale Ore needed. Later steps cost more Geo plus ore (1, 2, then 3 pieces), but ore is usually the real bottleneck rather than cash. The Conqueror trial's first clear, the 31-grub reward, and the Seer's 300-Essence milestone are the easy ore pickups.
A buy order that pays off
- Quill from Iselda, 120. Updates your map as you explore. Wayward Compass (220) too, if you get lost a lot - that one's your call.
- Gathering Swarm from Sly, 300. A little swarm vacuums dropped Geo straight to you (anything except coins that fall in acid). It pays for itself within a couple of farm loops.
- Sharpened Nail, 250. Covered above.
- Charms with teeth. Salubra stocks Shaman Stone (220), Longnail (300), and Quick Focus (800). Leg Eater up in the Fungal Wastes sells Fragile Greed for 250 and Fragile Strength for 600 - his shop costs 86 just to open, and wearing Defender's Crest gets you 20% off. Fragile charms break on death, so treat them as farming tools, not boss-loadout staples.
- Lumafly Lantern, 1,800 from Sly. Required gear for the dark shafts of Crystal Peak, so save toward it early.
- Charm notches from Salubra: 120, 500, 900, then 1,400, unlocked at 5, 10, 18, and 25 charms owned.
- Sly's permanent gear: Mask Shards at 150, 500, 800, and 1,500, plus Vessel Fragments at 550 and 900. Real max-HP and SOUL increases. The later stock needs the Shopkeeper's Key from Crystal Peak.
- Colosseum entry fees, 100 then 450 then 800. Pay once, farm the payouts forever.
Late-game money pits
Once the basics are covered, the big sinks look like this:
- Unbreakable Greed from Divine: hand over the fragile version plus 9,000 Geo. The full three-charm unbreakable set runs 36,000 if you're a completionist about it.
- The Ancient Basin fountain: toss in 3,000 for a Vessel Fragment.
- Nailmaster Oro's Dash Slash lesson: 800.
- Salubra's Blessing: 800, once you hold all 40 charms.
- Stag stations and misc tolls: about 1,560 for every station, plus roughly 700 in bench, gate, and lift tolls.
For scale, the wiki's floor for buying literally everything in one run is 69,210 Geo. Relics cover 21,650 of that on their own, grubs pay out 6,750, and the Colosseum prints about 2,000 a clear once it's unlocked. Keep your savings parked as relics until right before you pay up, and most of that number takes care of itself.
